1905: The first game ever played in the tennis tournament eventually known as the Australian Open takes place. The tournament was first known as the Australasian Championships and then became the Australian Championships in 1927 and the Australian Open in 1969. The tournament is initially staged at the Albert Reserve in Melbourne, on the lawns of the Warehouseman's Cricket Club, with Rodney Heath outlasting a field of 17 competitors for the title.
