1917: Robert Byrd, who would become the longest serving member of the U.S. Congress, is born under the birth name Cornelius Calvin Sale Jr. in North Wilkesboro, N.C. Byrd served as a U.S. representative from 1953 until 1959 and as a U.S. senator from 1959 to 2010.
