2001: U.S. President George W. Bush signs the Secure Aviation and Transportation Act, the most comprehensive air security bill in U.S. history, at Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C. The Act mandates the hiring of 28,000 federal employees to screen passengers and baggage in the nation's airports.
