1982: A new five-year agreement is announced on the 57th day of a strike by National Football League (NFL) players. As a result of the strike, the season schedule was reduced from 16 games to nine and the playoffs expanded to 16 teams. The new agreement provided severance packages to players upon retirement, an increase in salaries and post-season pay, and bonuses based on the number of years of experience in the league.
