1942: During World War II, the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal between Japanese and American forces in the Solomon Islands, east of Papua New Guinea, ends in a decisive Allied victory. The battle secures an airfield on the island of Guadalcanal that had been the focus of fighting since Allied forces took it over in August. Here one of four Japanese transports, Kinugawa Maru, beached and destroyed at Guadalcanal is seen a year after the battle.
