1927: The first underwater tunnel designed for automobiles, the Holland Tunnel, opens to traffic, connecting the island of Manhattan in New York City with Jersey City, N.J., under the Hudson River. The tunnel is named for Clifford Milburn Holland, the chief engineer on the project, who died before it was completed.
