1888: U.S. Sen. Benjamin Harrison, a Republican from Indiana, beats President Grover Cleveland in his re-election bid, 233 electoral votes to 168. Despite losing the electoral vote, Democratic candidate Cleveland actually received slightly more popular votes in the election, garnering 48.6 percent of the vote to Harrison's 47.8 percent, making it the third of only four U.S. presidential elections in which the winner of the electoral college did not win the popular vote. The other four came in 1824, 1876 and 2000.
