1942: Musician, playwright, actor and composer George M. Cohan, who wrote more than 500 songs during his lifetime, including the standards "Over There," "Give My Regards to Broadway," "The Yankee Doodle Boy" and "You're a Grand Old Flag," dies of cancer at the age of 64 in New York City. His life and music were depicted in the Academy Award-winning James Cagney film "Yankee Doodle Dandy."
