1861: The Pony Express, a fast mail service crossing the Great Plains, the Rocky Mountains, and the High Sierra from St. Joseph, Mo., to Sacramento, Calif., officially ceases operations, two days after the transcontinental telegraph reached Salt Lake City and connected Omaha, Neb., and Sacramento.
