1958: Russian poet and novelist Boris Pasternak wins the Nobel Prize for Literature for writing "Dr. Zhivago." The citation credits Pasternak's contribution to Russian lyric poetry and for his role in "continuing the great Russian epic tradition." He's eventually forced to refuse the honor due to negative Soviet reaction.
