1933: A United Airlines Boeing 247 crashes near Chesterton, Ind., after an explosive device detonates on board, the first proven case of sabotage in the history of commercial aviation. The transcontinental flight, carrying three crew and four passengers, had originated in Newark, N.J., with its final destination in Oakland, Calif.
