2004: Actor Christopher Reeve, best known for playing Superman in four movies between 1978 and 1987, dies of cardiac arrest at the age of 52 in Mount Kisco, N.Y. The actor had become a quadriplegic after being thrown from a horse during an equestrian competition on May 27, 1995, and spent much of the last decade of his life lobbying on behalf of people with spinal-cord injuries and for human embryonic stem cell research.
