1895: The first U.S. Open Men's Golf Championship administered by the United States Golf Association is played on the nine-hole course at the Newport Country Club in Newport, R.I. Horace Rawlins, a 21-year-old English assistant at the host club, wins the 36-hole, one-day tournament. Rawlins would also finish second at the 1896 U.S. Open.
