MECCA, Calif. -

An argument outside a home in Mecca turned violent early Saturday when a gunman opened fire, wounded the resident and drove off into the night, a sergeant said.

Sheriff's deputies were dispatched shortly before 5 a.m. to the 91000 block of 6th Street, where someone reported a shooting. A man suffering from a single gunshot wound was found in his front yard, and told deputies he had been approached by an unknown suspect, Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. Steve DaSilva said.

The victim was taken to a hospital for what DaSilva described as a non-life threatening injury. The suspect fled in what deputies believe may have been a white GMC Yukon sport utility vehicle, the sergeant said.

What the victim and suspect argued over was not disclosed.

The suspect was described as a thin Latino in his late 20s and stood 5 feet-8 inches tall. He wore dark clothing, DaSilva said.

Deputies asked anyone with information about the assault with a deadly weapon case to call dispatch at (760) 836-3215 or Investigator Melissa Nieburger at (760) 863-8950.
