Palm Springs prepares a taste of Modernism Week in a sample weekend
A weekend of "kick off'' events for February's Palm Springs Modernism Week starts today.
The run-up events go through Monday and include walking, biking and bus tours of the region's architecture, cocktail parties, a lecture and a "yard sale.'' Modernism Week is scheduled Feb. 13-23 and celebrates the popular design aesthetic from the 1950s and 1960s.
The fall kick-off starts today with a double-decker bus tour, one of Modernism Week's calling cards.
The Modernism Yard Sale on Saturday will feature vendors that specialize in mid-century items and local homeowners who have "cleaned out their closets,'' event spokesman Tim O'Bayley said.
Saturday through Monday, people can take bike and walking tours of Mid-Century buildings, inns, celebrity homes and houses designed by well-known architects.
We're thrilled to coordinate our October holiday weekend events with the efforts of other local partner organizations to produce this fall season kick-off, which has grown over the last two years into a wonderful preview of Modernism Week,'' said Lisa Vossler Smith, executive director of Modernism Week. "We hope that desert residents and visitors will enjoy this opportunity to experience the same quality of tours and events, but without the larger crowds of our main event in spring.''
Tours will leave from the Hilton hotel on East Tahquitz Canyon Way and all events are open to the public. For more information or tickets, go to www.modernismweek.com or call (760) 799-9477.
