PALM SPRINGS, Calif. -

Fall is officially in full swing and this weekend some special events are helping kick off the season.  And all of them give a little something back to the community.

Palm Springs Modernism Week celebrates the fall season this weekend with a three-day preview of their popular February event.

"This is an opportunity for the people that live here to actually be a part of Modernism Week before the big event gets here and 40,000 people come to town," said Chris Mobley, Chairman of the Palm Springs Modernism Week.

This more intimate look at modernism, will include a retro "yard" sale, a mod-themed cocktail party, and double decker bus tours that highlight the iconic architectural styles of Palm Springs.

"Palm Springs just in general is a modernist community. Most of the buildings were built in the 1950s and 60s, and it's a place where people come to be inspired by the architecture, the design, the art," Mobley said.

The money from tickets will go to neighborhood organizations to help build up their communities.  And to another special cause.

We also have a scholarship program where we benefit children that are in high school going into college on a four year program," Mobley said.

And if you get a little hungry after exploring the yard sale and homes of the rich and famous, just a few minutes away you'll find the World Championship Chili Cookoff outside the Spa Resort Casino in Palm Springs.

People from all over the world competing for a $25,000 first-place prize.

"We traveled around 3800 miles and we are "Jamaican me crazy chili!" said Cindy Lovell, one of the chili cookers.

Lovell is one of the 50 chili vendors, but she won't give away the secret to her prize-winning recipe.

"I have to take that one to my grave," Lovell said.

Entry to the cookoff is $15 which will allow you to sample two chilis. The event is entirely run by volunteers and all the money will be split between three local charities.

"Everybody just comes out and helps everybody else and it's just a whole family is what it is," Lovell said.
