Palm Springs Fire crews remain on alert after flames were spotted cresting the hillsides south of the city limits.
Earlier in the day, Palm Springs Fire reported that 24 vacant rock homes, built in the mountain side of South Palm Springs were checked out as a precaution. Those 1,000 square foot dwellings were found to be vacant. No other evacuations have been ordered for Palm Springs.
“There are still currently no plans to evacuate Palm Springs residents, based on current and predicted weather behavior,” said Palm Springs Fire Chief John Allen, who emphasized city residents will see fire activity on the mountain throughout the night and Wednesday.
U.S. Forest and CALFIRE fixed wing aircraft dropped retardant on the Mountain Center blaze throughout the day -- and there are currently 10 Type 3 wild land engines at the ready in Palm Springs should additional protection be needed, said Allen. “
The Palm Springs Fire Department is in constant contact with CALFIRE and the U.S. Forest Service, who are fighting this fire aggressively,” said Allen. “We will continue to update the community as needed.”
