If you choose to sign up for the Affordable Care Act, you will want to be careful when doing so. 

It's something most of us do everyday. You open up a web browser--such as Google--and type in what you're looking for. In this case, to sign up for Obamacare. You may not know it yet, but the browser directs you to a dummy website. It then asks you to enter your social security number and credit card information for payment. You do so, and you become the victim of an internet scam.

These scams will continue as long as confusion regarding how the affordable care act works remains. There are only two websites you need to know to sign up for the Affordable Care Act: www.healthcare.gov and www.coveredla.com.

You should also be wary of some government employees hired as navigators. Essentially, they perform the same role as licensed insurance agents. However, they do not undergo background checks or fingerprinting--just a remedial training program. 

It is important to remember that the government primarily contacts citizens by U.S. mail. They do not call, email or text message. If someone contacts you about Obamacare using one of those methods, it is likely a scam. 

If you're contacted by a scammer, you're meant to contact the Federal Trade Commission. But, with the government shutdown, they are not answering calls.
