BANNING, Calif. -

A Banning police officer has shot and killed a man during a confrontation at a hotel after the man allegedly brandished a handgun.

A Riverside County sheriff's sergeant said a man who was not a hotel guest and began knocking on doors at around 4 a.m. Sunday looking for a woman. 

Sgt. Jeff Buompensiero says the police officer and the man had a physical altercation at the hotel elevator.  The officer fired his gun after he saw the subject brandished a handgun. The officer immediately summoned an ambulance, but the subject succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The Banning officer is an 18-year veteran of law enforcement and has been placed on administrative pending the outcome of an investigation. His name was not released.
