INDIO, Calif. -

The J.W. Marriott in Palm Desert is giving back to the community by helping to build two spring vegetable gardens at the Boys and Girls club in Indio.

Volunteers rolled up their sleeves and showed up at the club on Tuesday ready to work. The gardens planted will include a salsa garden of tomato plants, jalapeno peppers, cilantro and onions as well as a fragrant herb garden. They also assembled an  irrigation system to water the vegetables and herbs and built a worm compost bin that the boys and girls will use to compost garden and other food waste.

"Growing and maintaining a garden is a healthy, inexpensive activity for youth the inspires healthier food choices, teaches responsibility and allows them to interact with each other in a socially meaningful and physically productive way", said healthy habits coordinator Desiree Porras.

The effort celebrates Marriott's "spirit to serve" program which encourages projects that give back to the community.
