City leaders, including Desert Hot Springs Mayor Yvonne Parks, are expected to attend the ground breaking ceremony at the site of the new Bella Vista Elementary School today at 9 a.m.
The new school is expected to be completed by 2014 and will serve students and staff now at Edward Wenzlaff Elementary School. The project will be funded by a bond measure approved by voters for new construction as well as $14.5 million in state funds.
"Wenzlaff will become home to the Desert Hot Springs Alternative Center," according to district spokeswoman Joan Boiko.
The ceremony is scheduled at the site of Bella Vista Elementary School, which will be 65-750 Avenida Jalisco.
The school will become the district's 17th elementary school.
