Eleven local senior citizens will be honored today before a sellout crowd in Palm Desert.

Upward of 600 people are expected to attend the 21st Senior Inspiration Awards lunch at 11:30 a.m. at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa. Brooke Beare and Patrick Evans of CBS Local 2 will serve as masters of ceremonies.

This year's honorees are: Betty Gorey and Ron Hare (Riverside County), Milton Katz (Cathedral City), Maria Consuelo Godwin (Coachella), Trudi Lain (Desert Hot Springs), Mel Barton (Indian Wells), Betty James (Indio), Phyllis Stuchul (La Quinta), Brett Romer (Palm Desert), Burt Spivack (Palm Springs) and Cal Custer (Rancho Mirage).

The county and the Coachella Valley's nine cities each pick someone 70 or older who "demonstrates a zest for physical and mental well-being through volunteerism and active engagement in the community," according to Supervisor John Benoit. The recognition was started by former Supervisor Corky Larson in 1992.

"The Coachella Valley is fortunate to have a senior population that is so active in our community. I am proud to see this tradition continue into its 21st year," Benoit said.
