The Riverside County Sheriff's Department today was investigating an accidental deputy-involved shooting that occurred during the arrest of two 16-year-old stolen-vehicle suspects in Coachella and caused no injuries.
Deputies responded around 2:40 p.m. Monday to a stolen vehicle call at Bagdouma Park, said sheriff's Sgt. Mike Tapp. They found the stolen pickup truck abandoned in a field west of Frederick Street south of Avenue 52, he said.
A deputy located the suspects in a nearby neighborhood at Primitivo Drive and Rodrejo Street, Tapp said.
"As the officer attempted to detain the suspects at gunpoint, his firearm discharged," he said.
The teenagers were not hurt. They were taken into custody and booked into Indio Juvenile Hall on suspicion of vehicle theft and possession of a vehicle, he said.
