12-12-12: Magical Marriage Day
Record setting number of marriages expected today
A record number of couples are expected to tie the knot on what's considered a lucky day, 12-12-12.
The Riverside County Assessor-Clerk-Recorder's offices as well as locations in Los Angeles and Orange County are expanding their hours to accommodate the lovebirds.
"It's really something to see this level of interest," said Assistant Assessor-Clerk-Recorder Michelle Martinez.
"One thing's for sure -- it's an easy anniversary date to remember."
In Riverside County, they are fully booked with 32 ceremonies scheduled and set to begin at 8:30a.m.. Martinez says Tuesdays and Wednesdays are typically the slowest for civil ceremonies, but excitement over the triple-12's put midweek in high demand this time.
The Indio office is also close to meeting its max with 19 ceremonies scheduled.
Each civil ceremony takes anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes, and up to 25 guests are permitted inside the clerk's ceremonial room to watch.
Couples who prepaid all expenses well in advance will be saving a little money. On Dec. 7, the cost of a marriage license went up from $68 to $90, and the cost of a weekday marriage ceremony performed by a county official went up from $65 to $75.
