Valley's first commercial brewery opens to the public

The Coachella Valley's first commercial brewery is now open in Thousand Palms.

A ribbon cutting is scheduled at noon at Coachella Valley Brewing Co., 30640 Gunther St. Attendees can take tours of the brewery and taste five beers, and master brewer Chris Anderson will answer questions, according to the Coachella Valley Economic Partnership's Small Business Development Center, which helped launch the brewery. It will be open until 9 p.m.

The 7,053-square-foot craft brewery offers beers with names like Monk's Mirage, Double Date and Desert Swarm, and will add 10 new jobs by the end of the year. It is one of a few breweries in the world to use a ``green'' brewing system that utilizes less water and energy, and spent grain is donated to local farmers for feed, according to the Coachella Valley Economic Partnership.

The brewery is using local farmers' seasonally grown products in their beers, with six seasonal brews rotating every three months. Jamie Humphrey, who got the idea for the brewery with her husband David, told City News Service that some of their beers are made with dates from Hadley's Fruit Orchards, kumquats from the east valley and local honey.

Beers will be distributed to local businesses, including Ace Hotel & Swim Club, Schmidy's Tavern, 3rd Corner Wine Shop & Bistro, Jensen's, Bristol Farms and Morton's.

The brewery is using herbs grown at The Living Desert in its Big Cat Brew, and part of the proceeds will go to the zoo. The brewery is also working with Bosch Baking in Thousand Palms to serve pretzels in its tasting room.
