String of backflow device theft leaves businesses dry

Recent theft caused water outage for 6 offices on Ramon Road

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - Thieves in the Coachella Valley have left multiple businesses without water the past two days after backflow devices were removed from complexes in two different cities.

The latest incident occurred Wednesday morning at the Centro Medico building, located at 69175 Ramon Road in Cathedral City.

News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 were at the scene as utility crews worked to make repairs.

Six offices in the building are without water because of the theft.

A similar scene played out Tuesday morning after thieves took at least 12 backflow devices from an office complex in Palm Desert, leaving at least 20 businesses without running water.

That incident happened at the Village Court Plaza off of Highway 111 and Cook Street. The plaza houses several law, medical and dental offices.

We spoke with some business owners in the complex who said water had been restored by Tuesday afternoon.

The Coachella Valley Water District made repairs by providing new backflow devices but the business owners were responsible for calling a plumber to reconnect their service.

Both cases are currently under investigation. We're waiting for more details from the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.
