Rash of burglaries has neighbors, businesses worried

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - Neighbors and businesses in Palm Springs' Uptown Design District are worried following a rash of recent burglaries in the area.

It wasn't a very Merry Christmas for the home d├ęcor shop 'notNeutral'. Director Troy Showerman said thieves took more than $2,000 from the store on Christmas Eve.

"[I] Noticed right away my cash box was on its side in the stock room, looked around and saw where they got in there, jimmied the door open," said Showerman.

The crime was the beginning of a string of attempted burglaries around Tamarisk Road and Palm Canyon Drive. From Christmas to January, 8, 'Trina Turk' and 'Christopher's Antiques' reported attempted break-ins through a window.

An employee's car was also broken into at a nearby restaurant.

Showerman even found a knife near the back door of his business. Oddly enough, surveillance video didn't capture any suspicious activity.

Showerman said, "These are all ghost happenings but they are happening, and now that I saw a knife too, and they're carrying things, someone could get hurt."

Sandra Garrat shares a wall with the building and overheard an unnerving conversation.

"It was late, and it sounded like it was just restaurant workers, they said they were going to bring in a gun that Friday," Garrat said. That's when she knew something wasn't right.

The talk of weapons worries neighbors and business owners alike.

Showerman said he's kick-starting a neighborhood watch and will ask the City Council for more street lights in the area. Until then, people must be vigilant.

With tourists coming into town and snowbirds, there's going to be a lot of activity. People in the area should turn on their lights and make it safer for everyone while attempting to deter these burglaries.

If you have any information about these crimes, call Valley Crime Stoppers at (760) 341-7867. You can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
