Police unable to track down hit and run suspect through desert

Driver crashed into SCE pole near Varner Rd. & Mountain View Rd.

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - The Cathedral City Police Department is searching for a driver who crashed into a Southern California Edison pole around 3:40 a.m. Monday. It happened near Varner Road and Mountain View Road, according to police.

When officers arrived, they found an abandoned silver Nissan Sentra with major damage. They said the the car had California license plates numbered 7FND884.

The collision partially knocked the pole over, causing it to hang across Varner Road by a small cable.

After the driver fled the scene, another vehicle traveling westbound on Varner Road toward Mountain View Road hit the pole as well. The driver wasn't injured but the pole smashed the front windshield and roof of the vehicle, according to police.

Officers said the suspect fled in the direction of Desert Hot Springs. They tracked the driver's footprints for about one mile through the desert but the tracks ended at Mountain View Road.

If anyone picked up a pedestrian on Mountain View Road north of Varner Road between 3 a.m. and 4:30 a.m., they're asked to call the Cathedral City Police Department at 760-770-0303.

Varner Road was closed to traffic between Mountain View Road and Date Palm Drive while crews with SCE assessed the damage.
