A female pedestrian was struck and killed in Cathedral City Saturday morning.
Police were called to Date Palm Drive near Converse Road around 1:47 a.m. Arriving officers found a driver, 49-year-old James Coley, with his vehicle pulled over.
Officers also found a Hispanic woman who had suffered major head trauma dead at the scene. According to Cathedral City police, the pedestrian was found lying about 30 feet from the vehicle.
"Preliminary investigation is the pedestrians were walking from west to east across Date Palm, no crosswalk," Sgt. Scott Sharpe said.
"And for no reason she ran out in front of a northbound car and was struck."
The name of the female has not been released.
Police said Coley admitted to drinking alcohol at a Palm Springs bar before the collision. Coley also displayed symptoms of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to Sgt. C. de Veas.
A separate traffic investigation will determine if Coley will face further charges.
