LGBT equality rankings released

3 Coachella Valley cities included in survey

Palm Springs HRC Report

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - A new report on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality has been released, and three Valley cities are included in the survey.

The Municipal Equality Index was compiled by the Human Rights Campaign.  Cities were rated in six categories for how well they serve the LGBT community.

Palm Springs ranked 10th among the 21 California cities included in the report.

City Manager David Ready believes the city should have had a higher ranking.  He disagrees the city falls short on its non-discrimination employment practices, as well as with the amount of effort city officials put into promoting LGBT equality.

"I don't know how they got their information," said Ready.  "I don't recall them making this request, but we certainly will make sure they see the correct figures."

Cathedral City and Rancho Mirage are also included in the index.  Cathedral City was ranked 11th in the state, while Rancho Mirage finished last in the rankings.
