MECCA, Calif. - People interested in becoming American citizens gathered in Mecca Saturday.
Dozens of people met at the Mecca Family and Farm Workers Service Center on Avenue 66.
Immigration groups were there with booths and information encouraging those here illegally to prepare for citizenship. Others learned about the process of getting a California drivers' license.
"The challenge is documentation. Our community needs to be informed. They need to be organized. They need to prepare. Even deferred action, citizenship, or even AB 60," said Luz Gallegos with TODEC Legal Center.
"We need to document all the things that prove we have been here for a certain amount of time. Each process is different, but we need to document it. We need to prepare for deferred action for adults or immigration to be ready," said Gallegos. "We need to prepare for any type of legalization coming up, whether it's AB 60, we need to start preparing our documentation."
Instructors encouraged youth in the community to help themselves and family members.
