PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - A 19-year-old hiker who suffered non-life-threatening injuries was rescued from a trail near the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, authorities said today.
Deputies responded around 3:30 p.m. Monday to a report that the hiker, identified as Michael Newby of Palm Springs, injured himself and was unable make it down the mountain on his own, said Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. Mike Portillo.
The sheriff's Emergency Response Team was notified, along with personnel from the National Parks Service and the sheriff's Aviation Unit, Portillo said.
``Park rangers reached the injured hiker about 4:30 p.m. and assessed Newby,'' who was airlifted in a sheriff's helicopter, Portillo said.
He was transferred to an ambulance and taken to a hospital for treatment, he said.
