Cheerleaders compete in the Desert

Thousands of cheerleaders to compete in competition Feb. 1-2

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - More than 6,500 cheerleaders and dancers are expected to compete at the Palm Springs Convention Center this weekend.

The Spirit Sports ``Duel in the Desert'' Cheer & Dance National Championships will be open to the public.

Local team Desert Elite Mavericks, formerly Desert Valley All Star Mavericks (DVAS), are already heading to NCA All-Star Nationals. They will be competing over the weekend.

The competition starts Saturday, Feb. 1, at 8 a.m. at the Palm Springs Convention Center at 277 N. Avenida Caballeros. 

The two-day competition draws cheerleaders and dancers from several countries, and about 14,000 people are expected to attend, according to the Palm Springs Bureau of Tourism.

Admission for adults is $15 for one day or $25 for two days; admission for those 5-12 years old is $10 for one day or $20 for two days. Children under 5 are free.
