Jennifer Lopez has never adopted, but she still used a personal experience to play a woman who chooses to adopt in the upcoming film, "What to Expect When You're Expecting."

Lopez, who in real life is mom to 4-year-old twins Max and Emme, portrays Holly, a woman who desperately wants to have a child but faces fertility issues.

"I actually did know those feelings, because I wanted kids so badly and I felt like I couldn't have them either," Lopez recently told CNN.

"It just wasn't happening for me after I got married, and I was just like, 'Maybe I'm not supposed to have them,' but I wanted it so bad and so that was kind of my way into her character," she said.

And as for the adoption part, the movie opened her eyes to what the experience of adoption could feel like.

"Toward the end, when they first introduced the babies to us, they [brought in] these two little Ethiopian twins," Lopez recalled. "And we held them and you really see how you could love a child that is not your own that you've never met before with the hopes of raising it as one of your family [members]."

The experience made such an impact on her, the 42-year-old told "Access Hollywood" recently, that she's now more open to adoption.

"After this movie, yes, I could see myself definitely doing it and being open to it for sure," she said. "You know what I mean? Whereas, before I never thought about it really."

And as for stars like Angelina Jolie and Madonna, who both have chosen to adopt, Lopez told CNN, "I commend them for it. I think it's a beautiful thing. I think it's a very selfless act of love to adopt a child who you don't know and [have] never seen before and never met before."

"What to Expect When You're Expecting," which also stars Cameron Diaz, Chris Rock, Dennis Quaid and "Glee" star Matthew Morrison, arrives in theaters May 18.
