High pressure over the Great Basin will generate strong gusty winds through and below mountains passes and canyons in Riverside County tonight, posing an increased risk of wildfire, according to the National Weather Service.
The agency issued a high wind warning for the county from 8 p.m. this evening to 5 a.m. Saturday. During that time, there will be northeast to east winds of 30 to 40 miles per hour, gusting up to 60 mph, forecasters said.
The Weather Service also scheduled a red flag warning for the county from 8 o'clock tonight to 2 p.m. Saturday. A red flag warning is issued when strong gusty winds combine with low humidity and warmer temperatures to pose a greater chance of fires spreading rapidly out of control.
"The winds will make driving difficult, especially for motorists with high profile vehicles," according to a NWS advisory. "Watch for broken tree limbs and power lines. Winds of this strength may cause minor property damage."
The greatest hazard for motorists is expected on east-to-west highways below the Cajon pass and through eastern Coachella Valley.
