Sinus Infections: What's Going Around for the Week of Sept. 25
Make way for the change in seasons. That's just one of the issues local doctors are talking about when looking at "What's Going Around" the area where you live.
- The recent scalping of the golf courses to make way for winter "rye" grass may be behind a new round of sinus irritation. Dr. Michael Jardula says he's seen a lot of sinus infections at his practice in Palm Springs.
- More colds and allergies are going around La Quinta. The folks at Desert Oasis Healthcare Pediatrics also report lots of bacterial conjunctivitis-- the yucky, gunky eye issue also known as "pink eye." Nurse Practitioner Gabrielle Schwilk also reports they're dealing with a few cases of strep throat and stomach virus, also known as acute gastroenteritis. Little children are at the highest risk for dehydration here because of the vomiting and diarrhea, but she says "Let's all be careful, and wash our hands."
- Be careful of bugs in the east valley. Dr. Randolph Gibbs tells us he's treated several skin "infestations" caused by a bug that frequents grape fields. "These patients develop a hive-like rash, and red/brown papules on the exposed extremities," he says. Cool compresses, antihistimines and sometimes, a short course of steroids are needed. This type of infestation is usually caused by fleas, ticks, or chiggers. Also the skin lesion called tinea versicolor is going around. This is caused by a fungus, and usually affects the trunk, shoulders, and arms.
- In La Quinta, we're getting reports of asthma and allergies from Dr. Erica Ruiz. She reports asthma is mainly a persistent cough that doesn't go away with time, along with a feeling of a tight chest and shortness of breath. And "it's time to break out the Zyrtec, Allegra, and nasal spray prescriptions," she says. Dr. Ruiz is starting to see the itchy eyes, runny nose and cough of allergy season.
