It's not often a World Cup event hits this close to home.
Obviously the professional tennis and golf events generate a lot of hype, but let me introduce you to the next big thing to hit the area: The Pentathlon World Cup.
Rancho Mirage and Palm Springs were selected as destination of five cities world-wide that will host a World Cup event over the next four years.
Beginning in February of 2011, the world's best pentathletes will descend upon sunny Southern California.
Organizers made things official Wednesday in a news conference at Agua Caliente Casino in Rancho Mirage.
This will mark the first World Cup event on United States turf in 12 years.
This isn't just any sporting event. Athletes will compete in five different events within a pentathlon: fencing, pistol shooting, swimming, show jumping on horseback, and a 3 kilometer cross country run. How cool is that!?
The events will take place at the Palm Springs Swim Center, Xavier Prep in Palm Desert, and the equestrian centers in Rancho Mirage.
