Experts debated last night whether there's something causing a large number of cancer cases at La Quinta Middle School. Caught in the middle are the teachers who may be working in a cancer cluster. Tonight, NewsChannel 3 looks into what may be slowly killing off teachers at work and whether kids are in danger.
Linda Loveless confronted a scientist last night. Linda is a teacher, a crusader and a widow. Her husband, David, was a science teacher before cancer killed him, but is the cause from his cancer somewhere inside La Quinta Middle School? She told us how her husband died of melanoma. She says the person who taught in David’s classroom after he died also developed cancer.
So a dozen teachers, some with cancer themselves, showed up as competing scientists debated in front of the school board whether the statistics proved if there was truly a problem at La Quinta Middle.
One scientist said there was not enough evidence to prove there was a cancer cluster.
Scientists have even taken soil samples to see if there's something in the dirt at La Quinta Middle School.
And after looking at the water, some scientists found something wrong with the power sockets at the school. They suggested high magnetic fields in some of the classrooms could be dangerous and should be fixed by rewiring.
Linda and other teachers gathered after the meeting. No conclusion has been reached and these teachers say they are paying for the school board’s delay with their lives.
Whether kids at La Quinta Middle School are at risk as well is not proven at this time. But with the loss of David Loveless, his wife Linda has not stopped in her efforts to raise awareness and prevent other deaths among her fellow teachers.
