Will Uncle Sam be calling?

(Washington-AP) -- Should the United States resume the military draft?

Senator Chuck Hagel says the country should start exploring its options, with the military stretched thin by fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Nebraska Republican tells NBC's "Today" show the war on terrorism could last 20 years or more. He says some kind of "mandatory service" should be considered for all citizens. But he stopped short of actually calling for resumption of the draft.

Another member of the Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Joe Biden of Delaware, tells NBC that America's standing army isn't large enough. But he says a draft isn't necessary now.

Both senators say the Bush administration needs to be more up-front about the costs of sustaining military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
