San Bernardino County adopts stringent building requirements

(San Bernardino-AP) -- Home builders in San Bernardino could face strict new building requirements and density limits under a proposed county code designed to protect homes from wildfires.

The county Board of Supervisors gave the new code preliminary approval yesterday. It must still receive final board approval next week.

If it's approved the code would go into effect 30 days later.

The areas included in the plan are at high risk for fire because of drought and a beetle infestation that has killed thousands of trees.

The code includes provisions that would require builders to space homes farther apart, install double-paned windows under certain conditions and close eaves to prevent embers from floating into attics.
