CHP wants you to report out-of-state plates

Starting today the California Highway Patrol is cracking down on people who live here, but keep their cars licensed in other states and they want your help.

From Washington, to South Carolina, to Nevada, out of state plates aren't hard to find in California.

And while many of the owners may be visiting, often times that’s not the case.

"We came down part time for a year. I guess it's been two years now."

Thelma White says she's lived here the past two years.

"This is our second summer full time."

But her car still has Oregon plates.

"It's good ‘til June."

White says she was planning to switch over her plates to California after her Oregon tags expire, but in California, a car owner has just 20 days to get California tags. That's the law.

"If you're coming here, purchasing a vehicle in another state and parking in California, that's fraud."

The California Highway Patrol says the state loses more than ten million dollars a year in registration fees from people who live here but register their cars some place else, either because it's cheaper or their car can't pass the smog test.

It's called “Cheaters” and now the CHP is cracking down by asking you to report your neighbors.

“If you're here legally in California and you're registering your vehicles in California and your neighbor chooses to cheat, maybe perhaps that doesn't feel too good."

Officers are hoping if it doesn't sit too well with you, you can anonymously report the vehicle to their website.

The CHP says it can cross reference the license plate with the owner's personal information so if the car is registered in Washington and the driver has a California driver's license and works here well, the CHP says the car should be registered here as well and the driver should pay his dues.

After all, the CHP says every California resident who uses California resources should pay their way just like everyone else.

Many drivers we spoke to said they weren't willing to report a neighbor, but only five minutes after the CHP announced this new tracking website they said they received more than 200 hits.

If you’d like to report a neighbor, you can log onto http://www.chp.ca.gov/html/cheaters.html.
