Activists say effort to repeal license law strikes anti-immigrant chord

(Los Angeles-AP) -- Opponents of the move to repeal a state law giving undocumented immigrants drivers licenses rallied today in North Hollywood.

About 150 activists and day laborers gathered for the rally and march to show their support for the legislation.

Marchers carried signs in Spanish saying "We are workers, not terrorists" and "Licenses for all."

Pablo Alvarado of the National Day Laborer Organizing Network says the effort is reminiscent of previous attempts in California to bar immigrants from public services.

Senate Bill 60 was passed by the Legislature in September. It allows immigrants to obtain drivers licenses by providing a taxpayer identification number instead of a Social Security number.

Governor Schwarzenegger promised during his campaign to overturn the law -- which would have gone into effect January First.

The state Senate voted Monday to repeal it.
