NorCal fisherman arrested in sea lion shooting

Associated Press - November 21, 2009 5:54 PM ET

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - California game wardens have arrested a Sacramento fisherman in connection to shooting a sea lion in the head.

Authorities say 43-year-old Larry Allen Legans was tired of watching the protected animals take his fish so he fired his shotgun at the sea lion 10 days ago.

A witness claimed the animal had been shot when it was spotted on a dock in Sacramento but authorities did not make an arrest until Saturday morning.

About a half-dozen sea lions have started spending time in the Sacramento River, competing with anglers for fish.

Officials expect the animal to survive because sea lions tend to have thick skulls.

Legans faces misdemeanor animal cruelty and other charges. There was no telephone number listed for Legans.
