PALM SPRINGS - A new list highlights several children's toys and shoes that have an illegal amounts of lead.

We bought a Dora The Explorer activity tote at TJMaxx in Palm Springs. It has nearly 8 times the legal limit of lead.

If kids handle the tote bag too much and later touch their mouths, the lead poisoning could cause major organ damage. It's just one of many toys now being targeted by California Attorney General Jerry Brown.

"As part of my responsibility as Attorney General, we take steps to remove lead from handbags, from toys, clothing or anything that young children would come into contact with. We have many rules on what lead content can be on objects that kids come in contact with," says Brown in Palm Springs.

Walgreens used to sell the Disney Fairies Silvermist Necklace. It's a good thing that Walgreens took it off their shelves a few days ago. The necklace has over 70 times the limit for lead.

This product made by Playmates Company has 22,000 parts per million of lead. The legal limit is just 300.

Other products include Faded Glory Rebecca shoes. Walmart has removed those locally. And Tuesday Morning, a store in La Quinta, removed the Barbie Bike Flair Accessory Kit.

At Target, we found a Cherokee brand belt that has high lead. But a cash register alert prevents customers from actually buying one.

Attorney General Brown adds, "These things come over from China and other parts of the world. It's quite a job to test it. It's my office's job when they find out this stuff to protect the public."

The complete list from the Attorney General's Office follows. The list includes the parts per million (ppm) for each item. 300 parts per million for lead is the legal limit.
