LA suburb agrees to reform police department

Associated Press - June 24, 2009 3:24 PM ET

MAYWOOD, Calif. (AP) - The Maywood City Council has agreed to overhaul its police department after allegations of widespread misconduct and brutality in the tiny Los Angeles suburb.

The council on Tuesday approved a court order to reform its department, which also patrols neighboring Cudahy. A judge will now sign the order.

The California attorney general's office released a report earlier this year that concluded the 45-officer department routinely used excessive force - in one case Tasering a handcuffed man - made improper arrests and lacked oversight.

The court order, reached in agreement with the attorney general's office, overhauls hiring, training and complaint procedures, calls for annual audits and creates a monitoring system to spot problem officers.
