News Channel 3, the Desert's News Leader, was the recipient of three 2009 regional Edward R. Murrow Awards for excellence in electronic journalism, it was announced Thursday.

Meteorologist Peter Cannella and photojournalist Serkan Stage each won a regional Murrow Award for Feature Reporting and Photojounalism for their work on "Steam Power," a story on still-running steam locomotives which first aired on News Channel 3 Live at Five on June 9, 2008.

Sports Director Paul Cicala was also honored in the Sports Reporting category for his work titled "Racquetballer to Rock'n'Roller." The story, which first aired on News Channel 3 at Live at Five on May 16, 2008, told the story of Desert musician Nacho "Nash" Bustillos and his athletic roots in the sport of racquetball.

Edward R. Murrow was a pioneer of television news broadcasting and set the standard all of us in television strive to achieve.
