All westbound lanes of Interstate 10 were shut down after a semi-truck rolled over in the middle of the roadway killing the driver, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The accident happened at 12:27 p.m. near the Haugen-Lehman exit, and the backup streched for more than 13 miles four hours afterward. The fast lane re-opened at 4:45 p.m, slowly alleviating some of the traffic mess.
Officers report the truck driver lost control of his rig and tried to over-correct, hit the side of the road and turned on its side.
All through Wednesday afternoon and much of the evening, officers detoured traffic to Main Street in Cabazon, and then back onto the freeway.
Some people tried to use alternate routes, like Varner Road. At last check, cars were traveling 45-miles-per-hour into Desert Hot Springs.
